Museum Lothar Fischer, Neumark i.d. Oberpfalz
The space of the Museum Lother Fischer was designed specifically for sculptors to display their sculptures; however, Verena Issel plays with the shift between two- and three-dimensionality.
For her room installation, Verena Issel used household utensils and other everyday objects, mostly with so called feminine connotations. From baby diapers and walkers to kitchen appliances and sex toys, Verena Issel arranges these objects like still lifes on a black cardboard surface. Vibrant, cheerful, and flat. This flatness of the paintings is also transferred to her sculptures.
The freestanding objects each consist of two wooden panels that interlock and thus only seemingly create a three-dimensional figure.
For the first time, she has also conceived a floor installation. “It was important to me that something folds up into the room. But especially with this theme, I wanted it not to become truly spatial, even though it is sculptural, which is why they are sculptures that are flat,” says the artist.
Backlash is a criticism of the return to conservative value concepts. In the past pandemic years, Issel observed a resurgence of “modern housewifery.”
“I believe that during the pandemic, the last 30 years of feminist efforts were destroyed in many contexts. And that was also the central idea of this exhibition.”
Issel deliberately chose carpet as the working material for the installation as a symbol of the domestic-private environment. Since the installation is walkable, visitors inevitably become part of the work and cannot escape the social coding. The artist hopes that this provides a space for reflection.
