Verena Issel’s work is a large carpet in honour of the great carpet tradition of Azerbaijan. 

But it’s a different kind of ­carpet, made from very symbolic ­materials: plastic bags, rubber gloves, and yoga mats. The main ­elements are undoubtedly the black plastic bags. Woven into a thick black carpet, they can easily resemble an oil rug. And that’s what they are, since plastic is ­essentially made from oil. Here and there, among the fluffy and wild pieces of plastic, a pink finger appears, pointing … or is it something else? Oil arouses desires. And perhaps it is the desire for inner peace and well-­being that wealth may or may not allow—we do yoga, they do war. Always the same thing. It doesn’t stop, skin and skin for oil, until the very end.
