Petromania/Petromanus
Goethe Institute Baku, Azerbaijan

Verena Issel’s work is a large carpet in honour of the great carpet tradition of Azerbaijan.
But it’s a different kind of carpet, made from very symbolic materials: plastic bags, rubber gloves, and yoga mats. The main elements are undoubtedly the black plastic bags. Woven into a thick black carpet, they can easily resemble an oil rug. And that’s what they are, since plastic is essentially made from oil. Here and there, among the fluffy and wild pieces of plastic, a pink finger appears, pointing … or is it something else? Oil arouses desires. And perhaps it is the desire for inner peace and well-being that wealth may or may not allow—we do yoga, they do war. Always the same thing. It doesn’t stop, skin and skin for oil, until the very end.
