Die Brüste des Tiresias (nach Apollinaire)
Elektrohalle Rhomberg, Salzburg (Austria)/ Kunsthaus Nürnberg (Germany)

Some of the literally multi-layered images in Verena Issel’s work The Breasts of Tiresias (2021) are illustrations of scenes from the surrealist drama of the same name by Guillaume Apollinaire (orig. title: Les Mamelles de Tirésias), published in 1917. Inspired by the Greek myth of the blind soothsayer Tiresias, who spends seven years of his existence as a woman after divine transformation, the absurd drama tells the story of a couple who swap gender roles so that she can become a general while he counteracts the problems of demographic change by bearing children (over 40,000 in a single day). In its time, it represented a deeply offensive debate on prevailing images of femininity and masculinity. Apollinaire’s play not only served as the libretto for an opera by the openly homosexual composer Francis Poulenc, which was highly provocative in the outgoing nationalist-influenced Vichy regime in 1944, but also as Verena Issel’s point of departure for a challenging look at contemporary norms and stigmas. The partly amorphous visual formal language expresses—in a contemporary as well as humorous way—the dynamics and ambiguity that already characterised gender and the body beyond social stereotypes in ancient myths.
